7 Early Signs of Termites in Your Home That You Should Never Ignore
Termites are one of the most difficult household pests to detect because they often remain hidden inside walls, ceilings, floors and wooden structures.
By the time you see obvious termite damage, the colony may already have been active for some time.
For homeowners in Malaysia, where warm and humid conditions can support termite activity throughout the year, knowing the early warning signs can help you detect a problem before it becomes a major repair expense.
Here are 7 common signs of termite activity that every homeowner should know.
1. Flying Termites Around Lights
Have you suddenly noticed many small flying insects around your lights, windows or doors?
They may be termite swarmers.
Termite swarmers are reproductive termites that leave a mature colony to establish a new colony elsewhere. They are often attracted to light, which is why homeowners may suddenly notice them around windows, lighting fixtures or other bright areas.
If you find a large number of discarded wings near your windows or lights, it is worth arranging a termite inspection.
Tip: Do not simply spray the flying termites and assume the problem is solved. The visible swarmers may only be a sign that a colony is nearby.
2. Discarded Wings Around Windows or Doors
After termite swarmers land and shed their wings, you may find small piles of transparent wings around:
- Windows
- Doors
- Light fittings
- Balcony areas
- Floor corners
- Furniture
Finding discarded wings indoors can be an important warning sign.
The wings themselves are not the problem — they may indicate that termites are actively reproducing or that a colony is established nearby.
3. Mud Tubes on Walls or Concrete
Another common sign is the appearance of narrow mud tubes.
These tubes may be found along:
- Walls
- Pillars
- Floor edges
- Pipes
- Foundations
- Wooden structures
Subterranean termites build these shelter tubes to travel between their colony and food source while protecting themselves from exposure.
If you discover a mud tube, do not immediately remove it before inspection.
A pest control professional may be able to examine the tube and surrounding area for signs of active termite movement.
4. Hollow-Sounding Wood
Does a wooden door, skirting board or cabinet suddenly sound hollow when lightly tapped?
This can sometimes indicate that termites have damaged the internal structure of the wood.
Termites may consume the softer internal portions of timber while leaving the outer surface relatively intact.
That means a piece of wood can appear normal from the outside while significant internal damage is already present.
Pay particular attention to:
- Door frames
- Wooden skirting
- Cabinets
- Flooring
- Built-in furniture
- Wooden partitions
5. Doors or Windows Suddenly Become Difficult to Close
This is an easy sign to overlook.
If a wooden door that previously opened and closed normally suddenly becomes difficult to close, homeowners may assume the wood has simply expanded because of humidity.
While moisture and seasonal changes can certainly affect timber, unexplained swelling or distortion can also be associated with termite damage.
Look for other signs at the same time, especially mud tubes, hollow wood or damaged timber.
6. Small Holes, Cracks or Damaged Wooden Surfaces
Termite activity can sometimes leave visible damage such as:
- Small holes
- Cracks
- Peeling surfaces
- Damaged skirting
- Blistered or uneven flooring
- Weak or damaged timber
However, visible damage alone does not always tell you how serious the infestation is.
The important question is:
Where is the colony, and is the termite activity still active?
This is why a proper inspection is more useful than simply treating the visible damage.
7. You Find Termites but Cannot Find Where They Came From
Sometimes homeowners discover termites in a cabinet, wooden frame or another area but cannot identify the source.
This is common because termite colonies can be hidden underground, inside walls or in other inaccessible areas.
Simply spraying the visible termites may reduce what you see temporarily, but it may not address the underlying colony.
A professional termite inspection should look beyond the visible insects and investigate possible entry points, activity areas and conditions around the property.
What Should You Do If You Suspect Termites?
First, don't panic.
Termite problems can be managed, but the correct treatment depends on factors such as:
- Type of termite
- Location of activity
- Extent of infestation
- Property structure
- Accessibility
- Existing damage
- Whether the objective is control or prevention
Different properties may require different approaches.
For example, professional termite management may involve termite baiting systems, targeted treatment, soil treatment or other integrated approaches, depending on the site conditions.
There is no single termite treatment that is automatically suitable for every property.
Should You Treat Termites Yourself?
DIY termite products may kill termites that you can see, but eliminating visible termites is not necessarily the same as eliminating the colony.
Termite management is generally more effective when the source of activity and the conditions allowing termites to enter the property are properly investigated.
The Pest Management Association of Malaysia also emphasizes sanitation, correcting building defects that allow pest entry or harbourage, and treatment by appropriately licensed and certified pest management professionals.
When Should You Call a Professional?
Consider arranging a termite inspection if you notice:
β Flying termites indoors
β Discarded wings around windows or lights
β Mud tubes on walls or floors
β Hollow-sounding timber
β Damaged wooden structures
β Doors or windows becoming difficult to close
β Repeated termite activity after DIY treatment
Early inspection can help you understand whether there is an active infestation and what treatment options are appropriate for your property.
